Press Release BREAK SUNDAY SK8ROCK 2009

Kubon is back!

JOSH McMurray Hits Syd

Josh is one of the newest recruits to Folklore in WA, but his ability to fly around with ease makes it seem like he has spent his whole life on a board. He recently was flown to Sydney to shoot for a major corp's new commercial and managed to shoot this park footage for us in the meantime. He had to ride a blank board for the ad shoot (which explains it in this footage), but keep your eyes peeled for Josh flying about on Folklore wood this summer.

GARUT WIDIARTA DEFEATS MARLON GERBER TO WIN THE ROTE OPEN 2009 PRESENTED BY THE COCA-COLA INDONESIAN SURFING CHAMPIONSHIP TOUR

19 September 2009, Nemberala, Rote Island: In a very closely contested 30 minute final at scenic Bo'a Beach on the East Indonesian island of Rote, Garut Widiarta narrowly defeated Marlon Gerber to bring home 20 million Rupiah (USD 2,000) and 3,500 points in the inaugural Rote Open 2009 presented by the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour.

"I feel a bit lucky to have been in this final and win against Marlon, especially because it's on not an easy wave to surf on my backhand. Marlon has been surfing insanely in every heat, so I'm actually surprised that I beat him" said Widiarta after the final. "All the guys were surfing so good, like Lee (Wilson), Dede (Suryana), Betet (Merta) and Marlon, so I was really fortunate to come out on top."

"Winning this event here at Rote means a lot to me, because now I have a real shot at the ISC Championship. I'm honestly tired of being number two or three or four. I want that number one spot", he added with a grin.

Marlon Gerber was good-natured about his loss, saying, "It was pretty hard out there, being up against Garut who is surfing so well and with the wind conditions what they were. I know I just needed one more good wave, but I just couldn't find it in time." Gerber had been blowing up in each heat, carving big turns and taking to the air at every opportunity, seemingly unstoppable until he met up with Widiarta in the final.

Widiarta had earlier send reigning 2008 ISC Champion Dede Suryana packing in Round 4 and then bested current number one ranked Lee Wilson in Semifinal One, while Gerber had gotten the better of Betet Marta, Tai Graham, and Made Awan on his run to the final.

The event had been blessed by solid surf each day of the three days of competition at the right-hand point break of Boa's Beach, with conditions ranging from 6-foot glassy conditions on day one to 3-4 foot wind blow surf for the final. Bo'a Beach is a very consistent wave that can be surfed on virtually every tide and seems to always have a surfable wave on offer, making it an ideal contest in addition being an excellent vantage point from which to view the surfing action. Hundreds of spectators thronged the beach each day of the competition to view these surfers compete.

The government of Rote Ndao in conjunction with event organizer PTR Communications and the Coca-Cola ISC Tour produced this four-day surfing event on the island of Rote in East Indonesia in an effort to promote tourism and provide a great venue to hold a six star prime ISC tour surfing competition. The event was opened to international and Indonesian surfers with 90 surfers from Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Switzerland, Uruguay and the USA competing in four divisions; Open Pro, Masters, Women's, and Local.

Each day at the contest site the local government officials and event organizers treated the contestants and spectators to cultural programs including dancing, music, and speeches to show off their unique and interesting culture.

At the closing ceremony the governor of Rote Leonardus Hanning expressed his appreciation to all for producing such an excellent event, and committed to having PTR Communications and the Coca-Cola ISC Tour back next year and as long as he is in office (a five year term).

Coca-Cola ISC Tour CEO Tipi Jabrik was also very happy with the event, stating "The waves, the people, and the place here are very special and unique. We've had a great competition and I'm looking forward to next year already. Many thanks to the government and to the local people for being such kind and generous hosts."

TOP SEED DEDE SURYANA OUT AS ROUNDS 3 & 4 COMPLETED AT ROTE OPEN 2009

17 September 2009, Nemberala – Rote Island : Top seed Dede Suryana was bested by Garut Widiarta today in Heat 4 of Round 4 as he failed to find the necessary points to stage a comeback against the lightfooted and charging goofyfooter on Day Two of the Rote Open 2009 at Bo'a Beach.

The dropping 3-4 foot swell resulted in a few lulls throughout the day's competition, especially later in the afternoon when the tide was bottoming out, but the majority of the days the conditions were quite good with less wind and bright sunshine.

Lee Wilson made no secret about his desire to maintain his Number One seeded position on the Coca-Cola ISC Tour, combo'ing Made Lana in his Round 4 heat.

Marlon Gerber defeated Betet Merta to advance to the Quartfinals, and Tipi Jabrik got the upper hand over Made Lapur to also get a Quarterfinal berth.

The Women's Division also had their chance in the water today with a total of 7 girls competing for a place in the Final's, which will be held either tomorrow or Saturday.

The call for tomorrow is for 8 am, as the swell is expected to remain about the same, so the contest director will put all on the competitors on standby and call for the first heat when the waves conditions are optimum to run the quarterfinals.

It should be another exciting day of competition at this beautiful venue on Rote Island, as the event runs down to the wire with the $7,000 prize purse and the valuable 6 star prime Cocal-Cola ISC tour championship points on offer.

The Rote Open 2009 is presented by the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour and sponsored by the government of Rote Ndao, PTR Communications, Garuda Indonesia, Merpati Airlines, Trans Nusa Airlines, and Heineken.

Stay tuned for more…..

SOLID SWELL CONDITIONS KICK OFF DAY ONE AT THE ROTE OPEN 2009 IN EAST INDONESIA

16 September 2009, Nemberala – Rote Island: Solid 4-6 foot surf got the Rote Open 2009 started in fine form on the first day of competition at the righthand reef break of Bo'a Beach on the east Indonesia island of Rote today.

Hundreds of Rote locals as well as dozens of international tourists and surfers flocked to the beach to attend the opening ceremony and then get a glimpse of Indonesia's top surfers such as Dede Suryana, Lee Wilson, Marlon Gerber, Betet Merta, and Garut Widiarta take on the firing reefbreak of Bo'a.

In this first day of competition, Rounds 1 and 2 were completed as well as the first two heat of Round 3. Tomorrow the swell is expected to drop slightly, so Contest Director and Coca Cola ISC Tour CEO Tipi Jabrik started things off early at 7:30 am and pushed through the day to finish up just as the sun was going down around 6 pm.

The extremely exciting surfing displayed today was a testament the powerful and well formed wave here at Bo'a, with a couple of surfboards broken and leg ropes snapped, but no injuries other than perhaps a sunburn or two for those who forget to liberally apply the much needed sunblock!

Tomorrow's competition is scheduled to begin at 7 am to complete Rounds 3 and 4, and the day after will most likely see the Women's Division take to the water. The swell is expected to increase again in about two days time, when the final day of competition will be completed including the (over 35) Masters Division.

The Rote Open 2009 is presented by the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour and sponsored by the government of Rote Ndao, PTR Communications, Garuda Indonesia, Merpati Airlines, Trans Nusa Airlines, Heineken. SurfTime, Magic Wave and Lines. It is a 6 Star Prime Coca-Cola ISC event with a total prize purse of $7,000 USD.

Stay tuned for more…..

MUSTOFA JEKSEN WINS OAKLEY PRO 2009 AT CANGGU BEACH

21 August 2009, Canggu-Bali : Mustofa Jeksen from Kuta Beach won his first ever Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Champion Tour contest today at the 6-Star Oakley Pro 2009 in Canggu Beach. Surfing against fellow Kuta Beach local Dedy Santoso in a 25 minute final, Jeksen aggressively exercised his proficient backside attack to post consistently bigger scores as the heat progressed, finally leaving Santoso needing a 9 point score to overtake him for the win.
Santoso on his forehand gave Jeksen an admirable battle in the solid 5 foot surf, his smooth style with big turns and aerials put to good use, but he just failed find the wave that would allow him to post that one big score he needed.

"This was my second, second place finish of the year so far, so I'm not disappointed. Mus surfed great today and I'm happy that he got a win. But next time I want to get that first place trophy," said the polite and soft-spoken Santoso with a smile.

Jeksen on the other hand was over the moon. "I'm so happy to finally get a win…I've dreamed about this and still feel like I'm in a dream now, it just doesn't seem real yet. I'm so happy, I can't believe it", he said excitedly back on the beach after getting doused by several ice cold San Miguel beers by his friends.

Jeksen has a well-deserved reputation as one of the best up-and-coming young surfers in Bali at 20 years of age, having a great repertoire of radical maneuvers, but just hasn't seen much podium time on the ISC tour circuit yet. So this is a big step forward for the young man, and he is enjoying it with gusto.

Placing equal third today were Garut Widiarta and Devis Ratif, both also from Kuta. Ratif narrowly escaped elimination yesterday; just nabbing the score he needed in the final seconds of his Round 4 heat. In today's quarterfinal he downed Rahtu Suargita, but couldn't get past the charging Dedy Santoso in Semifinal 2.

Widiarta looked to be headed for the final from the very start of the competition, as the lightning fast and stylish goofyfooter attacked each wave and racked up heat wins. In his semifinal heat against Jeksen he looked solidly in the lead at the midpoint, but then lost it when Jeksen ripped of an 8 pointer. Widiarta had a chance to get it back in the last 30 seconds but slipped off his board on his second bottom turn, so wasn't able to get the 7.1 score he needed to best Jeksen.

Today was the culmination of four days of competition at Canggu Beach, the west coast of Bali's premier surfing arena. The competition was blessed with great conditions for the most part, with waves ranging from 3 foot on up to today's occasional 6 footers. The wind was a factor as is normal during this time of year, so early morning starts were required, and by noon most days the cross-on-shore winds had the competition halted for the day.

After the Open final, the Masters Division contestants (over 35 years of age) had their turn in out the water. By this time the swell had picked up even more on the high tide, with massive 6 foot closing out sets rolling in. But the older veterans weren't phased and paddled out to do battle, not just against each other but also against the sizeable waves. Winner Ketut Menda, the legendary owner of the Bali Barrel Surf Shop in Kuta was overjoyed at his win, barely able to catch his breath. But never short of words from atop the podium, he said, "Thanks everybody, the sponsors, Oakley, my family, and especially my God for giving me the strength to make it through that final!"

Oakley's Brad Cunningham was rightfully very satisfied with this year's event, saying, "Our goal this year was to hold our comp at a great venue and give the boys great waves to compete in, and I think everyone will agree that we achieved this and more. The boys really surfed their guts out and it was a joy to watch. Thanks to all the surfers, the judges, the ISC crew, our Oakley crew, and all our sponsors for making it such a big success!"

Winner of the Coca-Cola ISC Best Maneuver Award goes to Raditya Rondi, who scored the most points for a single wave during yesterday's competition, a 9.0. He goes home with Rp 500,000 and 5 cases of Coca-Cola products!

The Oakley Pro 2009 was sponsored by Oakley Indonesia, Extreme Toys, New Era, San Miguel Light, GUS, and OZ101.2 FM Radio, and is proudly sanctioned by the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour.

Open Division Results

1. Mustofa Jeksen
2. Dedi Santoso
3. Devis Ratif – Garut Widiarta

Masters Division Results

1. Ketut Menda
2. Wayan Widiarta
3. Made Artha

GOOFYFOOTERS DOMINATE AND LEE WILSON OUT IN ROUND 4 OF DAY 3 AT THE OAKLEY PRO 09

20 August 2009, Canggu-Bali : In the final minutes of the final heat of Round 4 today at the Oakley Pro 09 at Canggu Beach, top seeded Lee Wilson was eliminated by goofyfooter Rahtu Suargita when his last wave failed to score the 4.8 points necessary to regain the lead he had held for the first half of the heat, scoring only a 3.1.

Wilson had held on to his priority for the last 5 minutes, but the strong winds and increasingly long waits for waves left him with only a marginal wave with which to work with. Suargita had worked the inside section, bashing the lip from the underside, racking up enough points to take over the lead and eventually the heat win.

Overall, it was a day for goofyfooters at a venue that is usually dominated by regularfooted surfers, who can take full advantage of the right handed reef break to break out every trick in their repertoire, especially in today's windy and bumpy conditions.

But today it was Suargita, Mustofa Jeksen, Raditya Rondi, and Garut Widiarta who turned up the afterburners blasted away, in the end winning the majority of the Round 4 heats against their regularfooted competitors.

Agus Purnawan, Dedy Santoso, and Devis Ratif on their forehands advanced to the quarterfinals along with Made Awan, who is also a regularfooter but didn't have to surf his heat as Pepen Hendrik was unable to compete, having pulled a groin muscle during the final minutes of yesterdays competition.

Today's action got started early at 6:50 am, with the wind already starting to ripple the surface of the Indian Ocean. It was anticipated that the swell would be dropping with a longer swell period, and it was indeed a touch smaller with longer waits between sets, but the wind was the factor that steadily eroded the wave conditions to the point that at just after 9:00 am when Heat 8 of Round 4 was finished, the announcement went out that the surfing was finished for the day.

The next announcement was far more enjoyable….Everyone was invited to the nearby Echo Beach restaurant for a BBQ lunch to feast on fish, chicken, rice, salad, veggies and even drink a few San Miguel Lights if they wanted!

Standby time tomorrow will again be at 6:30 am, and though the forecast is calling for a significant increase in swell, it is expected that a slight decrease in the morning winds and the rising tide will provide great conditions for the completion of the event tomorrow.

DAY 2 OF OAKLEY PRO 09 AT CANGGU SEES ROUNDS 2 AND 3 FINISHED UP

19 August 2009, Canggu-Bali : With the second day of surfing completed at the Oakley Pro 09, Rounds 2 and 3 have finished up and tomorrow will bring the man-on-man format Round Four.

20 minute heats and plenty of waves on offer had Round 4 finished up at just after 12 pm, as the strengthening wind and lower tide put a stop to the action for the day, similar to yesterdays conditions.

The waves today were a bit smaller, in the 3-4 foot range, but with a slight bumpiness that challenged even the best of the surfers at times. Tomorrow's prediction is for another slight drop in wave height but an increase in swell period, so it should be another premium day at Canggu for the remaining contestants who will be putting on a great show.

The highlight of the day was surely Raditya Rondi in Heat 6 of Round 4, who on his backhand smashed a couple of waves for 8+ point rides. The young trickster then pulled off a backside 360 air reverse, switched stance for a few seconds, then attempted a kick flip on the inside and nearly pulled it off.

The lowlight of the day was Pepen Hendrik apparently pulling a groin muscle in the waning minutes of the final heat of the day. He got six points for the wave and a second place finish so advances to Round 4, and we hope that his injury is not severe and that he will be able to surf tomorrow.

Tomorrow's call will again be for a 6:30 am start, and with the expected conditions on offer together with the caliber of surfers in Round 4, it will be a stellar show. See you tomorrow on the beach!

ROUND ONE OF OAKLEY PRO 09 AT CANGGU COMPLETED TODAY

18 August 2009, Canggu-Bali : The first round of the Oakley Pro 09 was completed today at Canggu in solid 4-5 foot surf, with some larger 6 foot sets closing out the beach on occasion. The action got underway at just after 7:30 and finished up at about 11:00, as the wind coupled with a fast dropping tide had conditions deteriorating rapidly causing the Contest Directors to throw up the red flag and call it a day.

With 12 days remaining in the 16 day waiting period that began on the 15th of August, there is no need hurry and rush through the event. The goal of the Oakley crew is to hold the competition in the very best waves possible, so as the swell forecast looks very good for the next 4-5 days, so its reasonable to expect that event could run over the next several days in excellent conditions.

Canggu is subject to strong side shore winds picking up towards mid day during these peak months of July through September, so the first half of the day will see the majority of the action throughout the event unless there are days when the wind comes later or (hopefully) fails to make an appearance.

A standby call has gone out for those surfers competing in Round 2 to be ready to go at 6:30 am tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. See attached heat draw for the Day 2 matchups.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE : JAMIE O'BRIEN WINS 2009 RIP CURL CUP INVITATIONAL AT PADANG PADANG

August 15, 2009 Padang Padang, Bali –– It was billed as a gathering of the best tuberiders in the world at the best barrel in Bali, and the Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang delivered as advertised.

Jamie O'Brien took home the cup in what will go down as one of the most spectacular displays of high-stakes tuberiding in the history of competitive surfing. The 26-year-old surfing sensation from the North Shore of Oahu battled through a field of 16 of Indonesia's best surfers and 16 of the world's top tube riders to meet legendary Balinese surfer and two-time Rip Curl Cup champion Made "Bol" Adi Putra in the final.

"This is right up there with my Pipe Masters and Teahupoo trials wins," O'Brien said after being escorted from the beach to the winner's podium on the shoulders of his friends and soaked with champagne. "I got so barreled today, this was the sickest event ever."

Hundreds of spectators packed the sands of Padang Padang beach to watch the show, as Padang pumped out perfect, smoking six-foot tubes all day long.

"It was as good as it gets today," said two-time champ Adi Putra after the final. "This is the first time I surfed Padang this year. I wish it was always like this."

O'Brien scored an unheard of four perfect 10s during the event, including two in the same heat during Round 2 for a flawless total heat score. He earned $2,000 for the win, but the prize money was secondary to the countless memorable barrels he made during his five rounds of competition. He plans to donate all his prize money to a local Balinese charity.

"Everyone is a winner today," said contest director Pete Matthews. "It was a true tuberiding event."

Final results

1st Jamie O'Brien
2nd Made "Bol" Adi Putra
T-3rd Ryan Turner
T-3rd Laurie Towner

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE : RIP CURL CUP AT PADANG PADANG GETS THE GREEN LIGHT FOR SATURDAY

August 14, 2009 Padang Padang, Bali – The 2009 Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang is set to go off in the next 24 hours. A solid southwest groundswell has hit Bali and contest directors have switched the official contest status from yellow to green, anticipating a Saturday morning start.

The field of 32 invited surfers – 16 of Indonesia's best and 16 of the world's top tube riders – has assembled on Bali's Bukit Peninsula and is standing by.

"I think the swell is going to get really good by this evening," said Hawaiian competitor Jamie O'Brien. "Tomorrow morning should be pumping."

Contest directors are considering holding the contest over two days instead of just one, swell permitting. This would allow them to maximize the swell and hold longer two-man heats. The opening round of 32 will feature four-man heats. After that, all heats will be man-versus-man.

"We don't want to see a wave-catching competition," explained contest director Pete Matthews. "We want to see a tuberiding competition."

The surfers will all be at Padang Padang beach Saturday morning for a 6 a.m. check-in.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE : RIP CURL CUP ON HIGH ALERT ; CONTEST COULD RUN THIS WEEKEND

Padang Padang, Bali August 11, 2009 – The waves remained small in Bali Tuesday, but all that should chage dramatically by week's end. Contest directors for the 2009 Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang have switched the official event status from red to yellow, or "high alert." Currently there is a nice low pressure system forming in the southernmost regions of the Indian Ocean. So far it's been tracking on an ideal northerly course to potentially send massive amounts of southwest swell towards the Indonesian Archipelago. Right now the estimated time of arrival is looking like Friday, August 14, with the peak hitting over the weekend. Tides for Padang are also looking ideal during this time, with medium tides all day. Contest directors are eyeing this storm closely and the 32 contestants for this year's Rip Curl Cup have all been put on notice for a possible Friday morning start. Many of the 16 international invitees are already in Bali or are preparing to book flights. For now, it's on when it's on...
