Rusty’s Rumble In Da Jungle 2007 finished with a bang on Monday 23rd April, the anticipated swell arriving with 4-5ft lines grinding down the Sanur Reef. Lee Wilson, Kuta, was the in-form surfer all event and was finally able to get the monkey off his back and above his head to be crowned the 2007 Rumble In Da Jungle champion.
A roller coaster start to the event proved just how fickle Sanur can be, and patience is a must for all involved. Thursday 19/4/07 started with a clean looking 3-4ft swell, however the extreme new moon tides (which almost washed the competition site out), brought deteriorating conditions and forced the contest to be put on hold only 3 heats into round 2.
A building swell and glassy conditions, called for competition kick start again on Sunday 22/4/07 at 2pm. However a gnarly, late arriving SE trade wind cut through the line up, again forcing organizers to put the contest on hold at the end of round 2.
Patience is a virtue as they say, and it all came together on Monday 23/4/07. Conditions ranged from excellent 5ft cylinders to testing 3ft on the high tide, but that is mother-nature right? Rusty were able to extract every ounce of daylight, running the mammoth 29 heats in the day to get the job done……
Obviously Lee Wilson was the stand out exposing his complete bag of tricks, however, special mention must go to the local Sanur boys Nyoman Sukasta and Wayan ‘Tenggo’ Darmayasa who both wreaked havoc on the top seeds placing 2nd and equal 3rd respectively.
In the masters division a flowing Wayan Pica proved too strong for Made Kasim’s huge backside hacks.
A big thanks go to the Sanur Beach Community, The Sanur Wild Surfers, The ISC, Von Zipper, Surf Time, Magic Wave, Jollie, Happen, Trax, MTV, Global TV, Hard Rock Radio, Bir Bintang and Smirnoff.
A RUMBLE IN DA JUNGLE party was held at M-BAR-GO on Saturday 28/4/07, with local rockers Snickers & Devil Dice, DJ, Bikini Show, Big Screen flicks and give aways.
