DEDE SURYANA WINS RUSTY RUMBLE IN DA JUNGLE OVER LEE WILSON IN BATTLE OF THE ISC CHAMPIONS

14 May 2009, Sanur-Bali: 2008 ISC Champion Dede Suryana claimed victory today over 2007 ISC Champ Lee Wilson at the Rusty Rumble in the Jungle 6-star Coca-Cola ISC surfing competition, starting out his 2009 season just where he left off last year, which is on the top spot of the nearest podium. He pocketed a check for Rp 10 million and racked up 3,000 championship points in the bargain.

In a final that saw some of the best waves of the day and the entire event, Suryana jumped out to an early lead by slotting into a barrel on his first try and setting the bar with a 6.5 point score. Lee wasn’t so lucky and got pinched on his first wave, getting him only a 2.5. Suryana was a wave magnet, consistently nabbing the best waves and soon had a 7.75 and then an amazing double barrel that netted him a 9.25, the highest scoring wave of the day. He added another 7.77 that had Wilson needing two 9-point waves to take over first.

It was clearly Suryana’s day, as towards the later part of the final the sets slowed down, not allowing Wilson much of a chance to fight back. At the horn the score was Suryana 17.0, Wilson 10.5.

Lee had this to say after the final: “Dede surfed great and went for it 110%. He is a great guy and an amazing surfer, so it was really great to be out in the final with him. If I would have made it out of a couple of those barrels, the score would have been a lot closer and maybe I would have won. But today was his and I’m very happy for him. But next time, watch out!” he said with a grin while clapping Dede on the back.

Being a great sport as well as great surfer, Dede said, “That final was so great! The waves were pumping! On my second wave I felt really solid, like it was my best one, and knew had a good score. But when I got my third wave..wow..if I had made that floater at the end it probably would have been a 10! But a 9.25 isn’t too bad right? I was lucky to get most of the good waves….because if Lee would have, it would be him with the first place trophy for sure. He is such a good surfer and never holds back. Just today in the final he didn’t get the good ones.”

The next stop on the Coca-Cola ISC tour will be in Dede’s home town of Cimaja in West Java from the 20-23rd of May, so Lee will be looking to take Dede down at his home break and Dede will be pulling out all the stops to make sure he is atop to podium in front of his friends and family.

But just before the Suryana and Wilson took to the water for their final, the ISC Master Division finalists paddled out to see who would take the early lead in the race to be the Masters Champion for 2009. The four over-35 competitors consisted of Made Artha, Wayan Widiarta, Ketut Menda, and newcomer Jake Paterson.

As these legends of surf paddled out, it seemed to stir the ocean up into a whole new level of activity. The previous 3 footers quickly grew to 4-5 footers, with 5 to 6 waves in a set crashing into the reef and giving the men a paddling workout as well as some big opportunities for glory. At the horn it was Jake Paterson who scored the highest total points and the highest single wave score, a 9.25. Obviously his past professional experience had well prepared him for conditions like this. Made Artha gave him a run, but couldn’t find a way to equal a 9.25, so ended up in second place, with Wayan Widiarta in third and Ketut Menda rounding things out in fourth place.

Back on the beach at the podium, Rusty GM Kane Faint had this to say when asked by MC Tai Graham to say a few words to the crowd on the beach. “ First I want to say thanks to all the Rusty and ISC staff for their help in running the event, and to all our sponsors. This was a really great final, one of the best ever, and it made for a super event. The waves were pretty good for most of the comp and today, but then for the finals they just got bigger and bigger. It was unbelievable. You dream about something like this for your comp, having the best waves for the final, but it isn’t very often you get it! I’m very stoked.”

But not to be forgotten are the other awards, namely the Coca-Cola Best Maneuver Award, captured by Wayan “Betet” Merta, who took home Rp 500,000 and five cases of Coca-Cola products, and the Sabre Best Barrel Award of Rp 2,000,000 was earned by Pepen Hendrik for his 10 point three barrel wave from the previous day’s competition.

The Rusty Rumble in Da Jungle is part of the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour and was proudly sponsored by Rusty Indonesia, San Miguel Beer, Sabre, GUS, Magic Wave, and SurfTime.

SANUR SHOWS ITS TEETH ON DAY 1 OF THE RUSTY RUMBLE IN DA JUNGLE

Friday May 2, 2008 - Bangsal Beach, Sanur : Yesterday afternoon’s bump up in swell size turned into a heaving seething barrelfest this morning, as daybreak slowly unveiled solid 6 foot sets using the treacherous coral heads of Sanur Reef as a launching pad to throw up some very solid and intimidating barrels, perfect for the start of the Rusty Rumble in Da Jungle 2008.

And just the kind of conditions Rusty GM and Contest Director Kane Faint was frothing for and taking full advantage of, by the way. “I surfed until after dark here last night, and again before daybreak this morning, and I can’t wait to get out there again for my heat. This is what Sanur Reef is all about,” he said with a huge grin as the horn hooted to start the contest.

The first heat got underway just after 7 am, and though it was a bit cloudy early, it was actually a benefit for the judges, who had an easier time seeing without the usual blazing sun scorching their eyeballs. Happy with some sizable surf, in Heat 1 Made Awan got straight into a couple of barrels and was stoked to come away with the first heat win and advance to the 2nd round.

Not to be outdone, Kane Faint got himself a 9+ in Heat 5 to win his heat. Practice makes perfect they say. Some of the contestants looked to be intimidated a bit by the size and reputation of this break, but others took it on with relish and got every bit of juice out of each opportunity. Kombong, Kopling, Koming and Ketut Yuliarta were good examples of the dominant surfers in Round One.

The surf was still pumping, although not as many bombs as earlier, and there was no wind yet at the start of Round 2, which started of at just before 10 am. some of the bigger sets were a bit fat, but that meant that the smaller more critical inside section was where the paydirt was, and in the first heat Made Awan found both the outside and the inside for a double barrel heat winner, netting him a 9+ score from the judges.

Later in Round 2, luck or destiny call it what you will, was certainly smiling upon last weeks Quiksilver Open winner Dede Suryana. After getting started with a solid wave to put some points on the board, his rode his next wave all the way to the inside, buy upon his exit his board ended up tombstoning until a set wave broke the tail off of it on the shallow reef. He had neglected to stash an extra board on the photography boat or the transport boat, so had to paddle in, get another board, and paddle all the way back out against the current and the set waves, however in the lead. The lucky part? During all this, none of the other guys in his heat were in position to catch a wave until he was already almost all the way back to the lineup! Dede ended up catching one more wave to put his score out of reach of the others and get into Round 3. I think he’ll be bringing a backup board to the lineup tomorrow, don’t you ?

By the time his heat was finished the wind has started to blow onshore a bit stronger, and so at the end of Round 2 a one hour break was called to see whether it would get stronger or whether the rain clouds to the north would push through and calm the winds. At about 2:45, Kane saw that it wasn’t going to happen and so called it off for the day. The swell looks to maybe drop slightly overnight, but maybe it will settle down into a good routine and be even more consistent in the morning. The plan is to run Round 3 and then the Masters heats and see how things go after that. All contestants are to be at the beach again at 6:30 am to prepare for a 7 am start.

LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE

Rusty is proud to present the 5th annual RUMBLE IN DA JUNGLE surfing competition held on Bali's East Coast at the legendary Bangsal Beach in Sanur. The waiting period for this six-star rated ISC event is set to commence on Monday, April 28th and conclude on Saturday, May 17th.

The perfect seething barrels of Sanur Reef will certainly make for a death-or-glory affair for those ready to charge the treacherous inside section which explodes over a table of razor-sharp fire corals.

Contest director Kane 'Dogbite' Faint has high hopes on the event: "Although Sanur has a reputation of being notoriously fickle, we have a three-week window for everything to come together. If we score it, this could potentially become the premier event on the ISC tour."

The Rusty RUMBLE IN DA JUNGLE has a prize pool of Rp30,000,000 up for grabs - but just as importantly - critical championship points to get a jump in the ratings over a highly competitive field.

Macbeth Footwear will award the surfer who rides the 'Best Barrel' during the event with a Rp2,000,000 prize.

The Rusty RUMBLE IN DA JUNGLE is supported by Macbeth Footwear, Heineken, Surf Time, Magic Wave, Trax, MTV, Hard Rock Radio, and GUS.

PRESS RELEASE RUSTY RUMBLE IN DA JUNGLE 2007

Rusty’s Rumble In Da Jungle 2007 finished with a bang on Monday 23rd April, the anticipated swell arriving with 4-5ft lines grinding down the Sanur Reef. Lee Wilson, Kuta, was the in-form surfer all event and was finally able to get the monkey off his back and above his head to be crowned the 2007 Rumble In Da Jungle champion.

A roller coaster start to the event proved just how fickle Sanur can be, and patience is a must for all involved. Thursday 19/4/07 started with a clean looking 3-4ft swell, however the extreme new moon tides (which almost washed the competition site out), brought deteriorating conditions and forced the contest to be put on hold only 3 heats into round 2.

A building swell and glassy conditions, called for competition kick start again on Sunday 22/4/07 at 2pm. However a gnarly, late arriving SE trade wind cut through the line up, again forcing organizers to put the contest on hold at the end of round 2.
Patience is a virtue as they say, and it all came together on Monday 23/4/07. Conditions ranged from excellent 5ft cylinders to testing 3ft on the high tide, but that is mother-nature right? Rusty were able to extract every ounce of daylight, running the mammoth 29 heats in the day to get the job done……

Obviously Lee Wilson was the stand out exposing his complete bag of tricks, however, special mention must go to the local Sanur boys Nyoman Sukasta and Wayan ‘Tenggo’ Darmayasa who both wreaked havoc on the top seeds placing 2nd and equal 3rd respectively.

In the masters division a flowing Wayan Pica proved too strong for Made Kasim’s huge backside hacks.

A big thanks go to the Sanur Beach Community, The Sanur Wild Surfers, The ISC, Von Zipper, Surf Time, Magic Wave, Jollie, Happen, Trax, MTV, Global TV, Hard Rock Radio, Bir Bintang and Smirnoff.

A RUMBLE IN DA JUNGLE party was held at M-BAR-GO on Saturday 28/4/07, with local rockers Snickers & Devil Dice, DJ, Bikini Show, Big Screen flicks and give aways.

Pro Tour Results:
1. Lee Wilson (Bali-Australia)
