DEAN BOWEN TAKES WIN OVER TEALE VANNER AT BILLABONG PRO JUNIOR BALI

24 July 2009, Gianyar-Bali : In an exciting final today at the Billabong Pro Junior in Bali, Dean Bowen put on a spectacular backside surfing display as well as showed off his tactical contest skills in the 30 minute final against Teale Vanner, coming back to the beach the winner of the comp, $7,000 richer, and the #2 Pro Junior ranking in the ASP Australasian Tour.

Bowen jumped out into the lead quickly, scoring on big turns and aggressive lip bashes rather than taking his chances on one of the rare tube rides that might come through. Keramas is known to be very difficult for the backside surfer, especially for long and deep barrels, so Bowen wisely chose the lip as to use in his points scoring foray.

Once he had gained the lead, he used his priority in the man-on-man final to keep Vanner scrambling on the inside. In the final minute, sitting on priority with Vanner needing a pair of 7.5 waves to win, Bowen used that priority to drop in on Vanner and eliminate his rival's last chance for a high scoring wave, sealing the victory for the young pro junior from New South Wales.

Vanner had been in great form all day, scoring big and exercising his full repertoire of maneuvers, racking up points heat wins and even a 10 point barrel in the quarterfinals. He failed to complete a couple of maneuvers that would have gotten him in good position, which made it extremely difficult to catch Bowen.

Contrary to yesterdays crazy waves and weather, which saw rain, fog, mist, and an extreme high tide coupled with impressive 8 foot waves (and some even bigger closeouts), today's Keramas was lined up, 3-5 foot and glassy, only a few rain sprinkles, and the appearance of more and more sunshine as the morning progressed.

The first two heats were especially memorable, as the slowly brightening sky revealed surfer after surfer ducking in, disappearing, and then being spit out of barrel after barrel. A perfect 10 in each of the heats, and lots of scores in the high 8's and 9's. There were some lulls in the sets, but the rising tide kept the momentum up with 3-4 wave sets coming out of a seemingly flat ocean several times during each 25-minute heat.

The last remaining Indonesian surfer to advance through yesterday's heats was Raditya Rondi, who unfortunately failed to make it out of a couple of barrels that might have had him in the quarterfinals had he been able to find the exit. He along with Dean Bowen were the only two goofyfooters that made it into Round 4. He put in a good effort, but at the horn he was in 4th spot so it was over for him.

Another interesting moment in the day was when the local Police decided to try to launch their Zodiac in the wrong place. They apparently underestimated the force of the waves, and to the entertainment of the crowd, found themselves getting pitched sideways into an almost barreling closeout! The standby jet ski with Kuta Beach lifeguards Made and Wayan raced over and had the soaked policeman on the beach in record time, then dragged the Zodiac back up onto the beach, the water tour over for the day.

It was a great four days of competition with just about every kind of wave and weather condition imaginable, and big shouts out to Billabong for putting together a great competition, to the local police and lifeguards for their security presence, to sponsors Nixon, Sony, Von Zipper, Hawaiian Tropics, the BIMC hospital and to the ASP and the Coca-Cola ISC for running a great event

Results :
1. Dean Bowen
2. Vanner Teale
3. Chris Bennett
3. Dale Staples

INDO BOYS MAKE GOOD ON DAY 1 OF ASP BILLABONG PRO JUNIOR AT KERAMAS

21 July 2009, Gianyar-Bali : The first round of the ASP sanctioned Grade 5 Billabong Pro Junior contest got underway today at Keramas Beach in Gianyar in glassy 3-4 foot waves, with five of the ten heats being won by non-seeded Indonesian surfers. The 10 heats of round one were completed before the strengthening on-shore winds coupled with the low tide had the contest directors stopping the action for the day.

The first to jump to the lead and post a win for the Indonesian contingent was 16-year-old Putra Hermawan in Heat 2, very much at home in this Keramas wave having surfed, trained and competed here regularly during the last couple of years. He was quite satisfied with his result, saying "I felt really confident out there, knowing that I could do good in these conditions, even though there are a lot of good surfers here today." When asked if he was intimidated by all the older and bigger guys he replied with a grin, "Not really, I just think about ripping each wave and getting points, that's all I care about!"

Next up was Agus Sumertayasa in Heat 4, followed by Mega Semadhi in Heat 6 who charged into the lead early and was one of the rare surfers to go left and get a good score for the effort.

Tonjo Darmaputra came from behind in the deteriorating conditions of Heat 9 to post a win, followed by Kadek Murtika who narrowly bested his rivals in the now 1-2 foot wind blown surf.

So overall it was a great session for the Indo boys, with three regular footers and two goofy-footers advancing into Round 2 against the international field of pro juniors from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, America, Tahiti, America, Malaysia, and Egypt.

The Round 1 is expected to resume starting at 6:30 am tomorrow while the tide is on the rise, and according to the forecast the size should be increasing dramatically, possibly up to 6 foot.

Heats 12, 13, 14, and 16 will have more Indonesian boys getting their chance at a spot in Round 2, including 2007 ISC Pro Junior Champion and previous ISC Junior Champion Mustofa Jeksen.

So come on out to the beach and see these boys surf their guts out for a chance at their share of the $30,000 prize purse at the Billabong Pro Junior 2009 at Keramas.

See attached heat draw for today's results and tomorrow's lineup.

12 July 2009, Kuta-Bali : 16 year old Sandi Slamet from Cimaja-West Java won Quiksilver's King of the Groms 2009 yesterday at Halfways-Kuta Beach, battling it out in a riveting 30 minute final against 12 year old Jeren from Canggu and coming back to the beach the ecstatic winner of the Crown and an all expense paid trip to Hossegor France to compete in the Quiksilver World King of the Groms Final in September.

"I can't believe I get to go to France", he gushed with water still running down his face. "Thanks so much to Quiksilver and to all my friends who have supported me. This is the biggest thing that has ever happened in my life!" he added.

He was carried up to the beachside podium by friends including 2008 Indonesian Surfing Champion Dede Suryana, whose hometown is also Cimaja. "It's a great day for Sandi and great for Cimaja, as this is the first time one of our groms has won a big event like this. We are so proud of Sandi!" said Suryana.

Later that evening at the Harris Resort Hotel on Kuta Beach, Sandi was called up on stage by MC Tipi Jabrik to receive his official crown and winners check to the cheers of the crowd, who had been treated to food, drinks courtesy of Coca-Cola, a fashion show, and ton's of giveaways from Quiksilver including boardshorts, sunglasses, backpacks, stickers, and more.

On the stage, Quiksilver Sport Marketing Manager Jake Paterson congratulated Sandi on his surfing saying, "From what I saw out there today and throughout the last four days of competition, the future of Indonesian surfing is in very good hands." He then asked the crowd to give a big hand to runner-up Jeren, telling them, "This kid is only 12 years old but surfed like a champion, getting first place in every one of his heats starting from Round 1, even besting last year's King of the Groms winner Putu Anggara. He will have many wins in his future, I'm sure of it."

Young Jeren then had his turn at the microphone, graciously congratulating Sandi on his win as well as thanking his sponsors and supporters, after which he was treated to a standing ovation by the crowd.

The final day of surfing at the Quiksilver King of the Groms 2009 was the culmination of the previous three days of competition where over 100 young surfers aged 16 and under from various islands in Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Australia descended upon Kuta Beach to compete for the coveted King of the Groms Crown, which would get them a trip to France to compete with the other winners of the National Finals for the title of the World King of the Groms.

Surfing conditions varied each day, thus presenting great opportunities and also great challenges for every ability level. Wave height went from 3-4 foot on the opening day down to 1-2 foot on the third day, before bringing in some solid 4-5 foot sets for the final day. Overall it was a perfect conditions and a perfect location for the young surfers whose ages ranged from as young as 11 up to the age limit of 16.

The Quiksilver King of the Groms is a Grade 2 Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour Junior Division sanctioned event, presented by Coke Zero and Sprite Zero. The eligible contestants will receive ISC Junior Division Championship points, and the junior surfer 16 years old and below with the most points at the end of the year will become the 2009 ISC Junior Champion.
