August 14, 2009 Padang Padang, Bali – The 2009 Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang is set to go off in the next 24 hours. A solid southwest groundswell has hit Bali and contest directors have switched the official contest status from yellow to green, anticipating a Saturday morning start.
The field of 32 invited surfers – 16 of Indonesia's best and 16 of the world's top tube riders – has assembled on Bali's Bukit Peninsula and is standing by.
"I think the swell is going to get really good by this evening," said Hawaiian competitor Jamie O'Brien. "Tomorrow morning should be pumping."
Contest directors are considering holding the contest over two days instead of just one, swell permitting. This would allow them to maximize the swell and hold longer two-man heats. The opening round of 32 will feature four-man heats. After that, all heats will be man-versus-man.
"We don't want to see a wave-catching competition," explained contest director Pete Matthews. "We want to see a tuberiding competition."
The surfers will all be at Padang Padang beach Saturday morning for a 6 a.m. check-in.

Padang Padang, Bali August 11, 2009 – The waves remained small in Bali Tuesday, but all that should chage dramatically by week's end. Contest directors for the 2009 Rip Curl Cup Invitational at Padang Padang have switched the official event status from red to yellow, or "high alert." Currently there is a nice low pressure system forming in the southernmost regions of the Indian Ocean. So far it's been tracking on an ideal northerly course to potentially send massive amounts of southwest swell towards the Indonesian Archipelago. Right now the estimated time of arrival is looking like Friday, August 14, with the peak hitting over the weekend. Tides for Padang are also looking ideal during this time, with medium tides all day. Contest directors are eyeing this storm closely and the 32 contestants for this year's Rip Curl Cup have all been put on notice for a possible Friday morning start. Many of the 16 international invitees are already in Bali or are preparing to book flights. For now, it's on when it's on...
